At least 8 areas positive for red tide – BFAR

Shellfish in some provinces in the Visayas and in Mindanao have tested positive for paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide that is beyond the regulatory limit, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said.

In advisory posted on October 16, 2024, the shellfish collected from the following areas are not safe for human consumption: 

  • Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur 
  • Coastal waters of Daram Island, Samar
  • Zumarraga Island, Samar
  • Irong-Irong Bay, Samar
  • Carigara Bay in Leyte 
  • Coastal waters of Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay 
  • Biliran Island in Biliran Province 
  • Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur 

“All types of shellfish and ???????????????????????? ????????. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are not safe for human consumption,” the agency said.

But the bureau said that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs from the said areas are safe to be eaten “provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.”

Meanwhile, the BFAR said that Maqueda and Cambatutay Bays in Samar; and Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar are now free from toxic red tide.
