TROOPS from Japan, Australia, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Philippines conducted amphibious assault drills on the beaches of Palawan fronting the West Philippine Sea on Thursday.

Members of the French Armed Forces, Royal Thai Marine Corps and Indonesian Kor Marinir served as observers.

The multinational military exercise includes breaching obstacles and target suppression through live fire and infantry maneuvers at Long Point, Barangay Apurawan, in Aborlan, Palawan.

Philippine Marine Corps Public Information Office chief Capt. Marissa Merrill said the exercise was part of the annual Kaagapay ng Mandirigma sa Dagat (Kamandag 08-24) between the PMC and the United States Marine Corps.

Kamandag (venom) aims to strengthen the interoperability of Philippine and US troops while promoting regional security and cooperation.

At least 2,351 personnel joined the drill: 1,150 troops from the Philippines, 1,072 from the US, 58 from South Korea, 54 from Japan, eight from the UK, five from Australia, two from France, and one each from Thailand and Indonesia as observers.
