THE architectural practice in the Philippines has been greatly strengthened by a major Supreme Court ruling upholding Republic Act 9266, known as the Architecture Act of 2002. This decision emphasized that the practice of architecture is exclusively for licensed and registered architects. It clearly defined that only those who are fully qualified should sign and seal architectural plans and designs. This has provided clarity in the industry and reinforced the role of architects as the rightful professionals to handle building and similar infrastructure projects.
As a result, many local government units (LGUs) have started accepting and requiring building permit applications signed and sealed only by licensed architects. This change has ensured that proper standards and regulations are followed, protecting both the public and the environment. It has also highlighted the importance of having a knowledgeable architect involved in the planning and construction process.
The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) has played a key role in raising public awareness about the importance of hiring architects. These campaigns, with slogans like “Sa Arkitekto Sigurado” and “For your Plans and Designs, Get an Architect,” have successfully educated the public on why the expertise of architects is essential. Through these programs, more people are now realizing the critical role architects play in ensuring safe, well-designed and sustainable buildings.
With growing concerns about climate change, architects have become even more valuable in designing solutions to combat environmental problems. They now incorporate eco-friendly and sustainable practices into their designs, helping to reduce the negative impact of construction on the environment. As the Philippine economy grows and urbanization rapidly increases in cities and municipalities, the role of architects has become even more significant.
