Several churches were not spared nature’s wrath as the Bicol region continues to endure heavy and continuous downpour brought by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

Knee-deep waters entered the Holy Cross Parish in Nabua, Camarines Sur while the main road in the town is not yet passable.

Kristine’s effects were also evident at the St. Bartholomew Parish in Baao, also in Camarines Sur, as wooden church pews can be seen floating in chest- high flood.

Meanwhile, the Polangui Parish Church in Albay opened its doors to more than 200 individuals seeking shelter from the adverse weather.

However, floodwaters also entered the church forcing to transfer vulnerable evacuees – pregnant women, infants, sick persons, and the elderly – to higher portions such as the altar and the priests’ residence.

According to state weather service PAGASA, provinces in Bicol region such as Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Sorsogon are currently under Signal No. 1 as of 2 p.m. Thursday.

However, torrential rains over the region have not only submerged several cities and towns but also killed more than 20 people.—Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
