At least 13 local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas have been placed under a state of calamity after heavy rains dumped by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) inundated areas and caused landslides.
According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Eastern Visayas, 12 LGUs in the Province of Eastern Samar while the other one, Calbayog City in the Province of Samar, are under a state of calamity.
Floodwaters began to recede afternoon of October 23, 2024, this was learned.
OCD 8 added that the clearing operations in affected areas are already done, as of this writing.
At least 667,763 individuals or 174,361 families in Eastern Visayas are affected by the storm.
Of over 600,000 affected individuals, 209,000 are from Northern Samar, wherein most towns in the province got flooded again.
The good news is that the province bounced back to normal as of October 24, 2024, without a recorded casualty, according to Josh Echano, Northern Samar Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer.
“The impact to livelihood and agriculture is less than what is required to be in the state of calamity. ‘Yung buong probinsya, buong lalawigan ay nakabalik na sa normal, ang displacement o massive evacuation natin ay dahilan sa anticipatory action po hindi to dahil sa napilitan dahil sa calamity or sa bagyo,” Echano said in an interview over GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak. — GMA Regional TV
