Architecture students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Environment and Design recently attended the 13th La Salle-URL Architecture Workshop in Barcelona, Spain, where they explored the evolution of Catalan architecture and design. The students were joined by mentors Noel Nicolas and Ramon Bizares, along with six alumni.
The three-week summer workshop introduced participants to Catalan modernism, a regional architectural style blending tradition with innovation, inspired by natural forms and detailed craftsmanship. Known for organic shapes, curved lines, mosaics, and intricate details, Catalan modernism is prominently represented by Antoni Gaudí, creator of the iconic Sagrada Família.
Students toured Barcelona’s historic landmarks, studying the city’s architectural transformation and urban planning. They visited Palau Güell, Gaudí’s first major work commissioned by industrialist Eusebi Güell and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is considered one of the earliest Art Nouveau buildings globally.
Guided by master classes and presentations, the workshop focused on design communication, enabling students to articulate their creative ideas and decisions. The program included a practical project on signage design, emphasizing its role in public spaces.
Faculty members, including Ar. Pedro Garcia, Ar. Lorenzo Kárász, and Montserrat Villaverde, oversaw the students’ work in a dedicated design studio. The experience provided Benilde students with hands-on skills in Catalan modernism and public architecture, adding depth to their academic training.
