ILOILO CITY — Severe tropical storm ‘Kristine’ destroyed 79 classrooms in Western Visayas, impacting more than 1.6 million students, according to initial data from the Department of Education (DepEd) regional office.

The storm forced widespread class cancellations, disrupting the school week and affecting over 3,918 public learning institutions in the region.

In the breakdown of classroom damages, DepEd reported that 15 classrooms were completely destroyed, five suffered major damage, and 59 sustained minor damage. 

Negros Occidental was hit hardest with 14 classrooms totally destroyed and four more requiring major repairs. Iloilo also saw one classroom destroyed and one requiring significant repairs.

For minor damages, 45 classrooms in Negros Occidental and 14 in Iloilo will need repairs to be fully operational again.

Aside from educational disruptions, ‘Kristine’ affected 161,283 individuals in Western Visayas, representing 38,659 families, who are now coping with the storm’s aftermath.

DepEd is now assessing the extent of damages and planning the necessary repairs to restore safe learning environments across affected schools.
