EIGHT projects from across the Philippines were shortlisted in eight categories at the prestigious World Architecture Festival 2024 (WAF), set to take place in Singapore from Nov. 6 to 8, 2024.
Launched in 2008, the WAF is the world’s largest annual international architectural event, which includes panel discussions and talks by leading global architectural thinkers and industry personalities.
This year’s roster of finalists features seven local firms that are new to the WAF and one firm that has previously competed in the festival. The firms will represent the country and present their projects in front of an esteemed panel of judges in Singapore.
Hailing from Metro Manila are Archion Architects — their second year joining the competition — which was shortlisted under the Future Projects: Health Category for their project, “Felicidad Sy Multi-Specialty Building” located on Taft Avenue, Ermita, Metro Manila.
Newcomer Bacungan Architects qualified for the Future Projects: Competition Category for their project, “The Waste-Wise House” in North Caloocan, Metro Manila. Pluszerotwo Architecture will debut at the WAF with its entry “Balai Ani: House of Harvest” in Angono, Rizal, under the Future Projects: Residential Category.
Three Cebuano firms will be defending their projects at WAF: LLG Architects Design Studio with their entry, “The Rise at Monterazzas,” which is shortlisted under the Future Projects: Residential Category; Obra Majoralia Architecture and their project, “Loboc Performing Arts Center, Cebu Center,” under the Future Projects: Culture Category; and San Studio and their project, “Interweaving Dualities: Reimagining City Hall Architecture” in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, which made it to the Future Projects: Civic Category.
Two firms from Davao complete the list: LT Pagaduan Design Studio, which is shortlisted under the Future Projects: Infrastructure Category for its project, “New Public Market and Terminal Complex,” in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, and Swito Designs, which qualified under the Future Projects: Civic Category with its entry, “Peace Building,” in Maguindanao Del Norte Provincial Capitol, Davao City.
WAF partners like Grohe, a global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, and Kanto organized events that helped prepare the finalists.
“Every year, Filipino designers … make us proud of their ingenuity and artistry through world-class projects. … At Grohe, we remain committed to supporting them through these preparatory events to equip them with the proper tools they need to help them finish strong at the WAF,” said Hermie Limbo, country leader, Philippines, Lixil Water Technology APAC.
