The Philippine Mortuary Association (PMA) on Saturday noted that all funeral homes, funeral parlors and mortuaries must have a licensed embalmer to ensure that the final disposition of the remains of departed loved ones is done properly.
“Lahat ng punerarya dapat may licensed embalmer. May gagawin sa katawan ng tao kaya kailangan may licensed embalmer talagang gumagawa noon,” said PMA spokesperson Jordan Miranda in a Super Radyo dzBB interview discussing businesses that are engaged in preparing the departed for burial or cremation.
(All funeral homes must have a licensed embalmer. There is something to be done with the human body, so there must be a licensed embalmer who should be performing the task.)
For things to proceed smoothly, Miranda said all death certificates must also be signed by the licensed embalmer before the wake or other ceremonies could begin, as required by all local government units.
He noted this is just among the basic standards that a funeral home should have.
Other factors such as the location, the drainage system and facilities must also be considered.
“Una, location dapat hindi malapit sa mga (residente). For the (Department of Health) concern, kailangan meron kang maayos na drainage system. (Pangalawa), may filtering na tinatawag, kailangan hindi magkaroon ng malansang amoy sa paligid. May machines din na dapat nandoon sa mga punerarya. Pangatlo is dapat yung facility mo ay well maintained and sterilized,” he said.
(First, the location should not be near (residences). For the DOH concern, you must have a proper drainage system. There should be proper filters, there must not be any untoward smells. Funeral homes should also have certain equipment. Third, your facility must be well maintained and sterilized.)
For those seeking the professional services of a funeral home, Miranda added that the basic cost of a funeral package starts at around P30,000 to P35,000, which is offered by PMA members.—Sherylin Untalan/RF, GMA Integrated News
