The latest addition to Lionsgate Play, Magpie Murders, delivers a layered mystery adventure that combines two interwoven whodunits, appealing to classic detective story fans.

Based on Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling novel, the series introduces viewers to the fictional detective Atticus Pünd, portrayed by Tim McMullan, and his real-world counterpart, editor Susan Ryeland, played by Lesley Manville. As Ryeland navigates the sudden death of author Alan Conway, she uncovers unexpected connections in his final, unfinished manuscript.

The show’s dual narrative brings a fresh spin to the cozy mystery genre, following Ryeland as she delves into both a fictional investigation and her own real-life case.

Described as a tribute to classic authors like Agatha Christie, the series keeps viewers on their toes with well-placed red herrings and wit. Manville’s portrayal of Ryeland has been praised for breaking age-related stereotypes, presenting her character as an experienced, nonconformist amateur sleuth.

Reflecting on his approach, Horowitz shared in an interview with Town & Country his preference for nonviolent mysteries.

“My books are meant to be, if not an escape, then at least a refuge from the storms that are blowing all around us. Murder mystery is an opportunity to close the shutters, draw up the bedclothes, and revel in the intellectual pursuit of truth,” he said.

Magpie Murders debuted on Lionsgate Play on Oct. 25, available through PLDT Home and Smart.
