MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Martin Romualdez congratulated former United States President and now President-elect Donald Trump on his victory and hoped for a stronger relationship with its oldest treaty ally.
In a statement on Wednesday night, Romualdez said that Trump’s leadership would bring opportunities to deepen ties between the Philippines and the US, especially on economic partnerships that would open doors for trade and investment which would benefit Filipinos.
He also believes that Trump maintains maritime security and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in the West Philippine Sea.
“The Philippines values a strong defense partnership with the US, supporting peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific,” Romualdez said.
Romualdez said that the Philippines would remain committed to a strategic alliance with the US founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and the common goals of security and progress.
Trump has received 301 electoral votes, winning over the battleground states while also receiving the highest national popular vote for a Republican candidate since 2004.
