Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday laughed off the call of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, for her to leave politics, saying that time will come when she will eventually do so.
“Pagkatapos niya akong sinabi na tumakbo ako nang tumakbo, tumakbo akong mayor, tumakbo akong vice mayor, [tapos] sabihan niya ako no’n,” the vice president said at a press conference, while smiling.
(After he told me to keep on running, I ran as mayor and as vice mayor, then he will say that.)
She was reacting to the remark of her father who earlier advised her to get out of politics and just live a peaceful life.
“Si Inday, pasalamat ka na lang sa Diyos na ang tatay mo naging Presidente, ikaw naging Vice President. Bihirang-bihira yan, bihira sa isang pamilya. Hindi lahat ng pamilya sa Pilipinas… pasalamat na lang tayo. Now, as fast as you can, get out of politics,” the older Duterte said, referring to the Vice President by her nickname, Inday Sara.
(Inday, she should just thank the Lord that her father became President and she became Vice President. That is a very rare occurrence, very rare for a family. Not all families experience this. Let’s just be thankful. Now, as fast as you can, get out of politics.)
In response, the younger Duterte said that time will come when she will leave politics, and that she would want that herself.
“Darating din tayo doon na hindi na ako sasali sa politics. Ako man gusto ko rin. Ang problema ko is that I need to answer to 32.2 million Filipinos who gave confidence and trust for me to become the vice president of everyone,” she said.
(I will also get to the point where I will no longer join politics. I want it too, but my problem is that I need to answer to 32.2 million Filipinos who gave confidence and trust for me to become the vice president of everyone.)
“Darating din tayo doon na hindi na ako sasali sa pulitika. But buhay kasi natin, hindi natin alam kung ano mangyayari bukas. We can only plan but it’s always God’s purpose that shall prevail. So, plano lang tayo nang plano pero magtiwala rin tayo sa Diyos,” she added.
(We will get to that. But we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. We can only plan but it’s always God’s purpose that shall prevail. So, let’s just keep on planning but let’s also trust in God.)
Sara is facing a congressional inquiry into the budget use of the Vice President’s office and that of the Department of Education when she served as Education chief.
Congressmen involved in the probe have recently raised questions related to state auditors’ findings that the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) use of confidential funds was accompanied by inconsistent acknowledgement receipts.
The Vice President has maintained that she did not misuse OVP funds and that the congressional inquiry is just a test case for impeachment. — BM, GMA Integrated News
