INTERIOR Secretary Jonvic Remulla is up for confirmation by the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday.
Remulla was appointed to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last month.
“There’s a high chance that Secretary Remulla will be confirmed on the spot, given that we are less than six months away from the 2025 mid-term elections,” Surigao del Sur 2nd District Rep. Johnny Pimentel, an assistant minority leader of the CA, said in a statement on Sunday.
“We need the DILG’s peace and order functions as we approach the campaign period and the May 12 elections,” Pimentel said.
Among the DILG’s attached agencies is the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The CA’s Committee on the Interior and Local Government is headed by Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri.
The commission received Remulla’s appointment papers on Oct. 9, when Congress was on a break.
Congress resumed session on Nov. 4.
The Constitution allows the president to make appointments on an ad interim basis while Congress is on recess.
Before his appointment, Remulla, the brother of Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla of the Department of Justice, was serving as Cavite’s governor.
He succeeded Benhur Abalos, who will run for senator in the 2025 elections.
