MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Order and Safety on Tuesday held a briefing on policemen affected by the drug war under the Duterte administration.
Earlier this month, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil reported that 1,286 PNP personnel were wounded and killed in the line of duty. The 1,286 was composed of 312 dead and 974 injured.
Santa Rosa City Rep. Dan Fernandez, the committee’s chairman, said in a speech at the start of the briefing said he wanted to “push for the inclusion of a special account in the proposed national budget that could be used as aid for our law enforcers who need help.”
The National Police Commission provides death benefits for lawmen killed in action.
During the briefing, Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo, PNP spokesman, told the committee that “there is a certain amount allocated for the PNP legal assistance but this is really not enough to cover all the PNP personnel facing service-related cases.”
Fajardo said that P200 million was allocated to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for legal aid.
The PNP is an attached agency of the DILG.
The Committee on Public Order and Safety is part of the quad committee looking into former president Rodrigo Duterte’s drug campaign, which allegedly resulted in the death of thousands and human rights abuses.
