THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has implemented a nationwide ban on the use of all social media platforms within its facilities.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said this decision, which was announced a day after a similar prohibition on cellphone use, underscores the government’s commitment to minimizing distractions and maintaining operational integrity in correctional institutions.
The new directive, issued as an addendum to the initial no-cellphone policy, mandates strict compliance among all personnel, including superintendents, directors of operating prisons, and heads of offices across BuCor’s network of correctional facilities.

“Social media, while widely used, poses significant risks to the security and confidentiality of our operations,” Catapang stated.
“This measure is intended to ensure that all staff remain focused on their duties and that the activities within our institutions remain uncompromised,” he added.
The directive includes stringent consequences for personnel who fail to adhere to the ban. Catapang has emphasized that violations will be met with administrative sanctions, reinforcing the gravity of the new regulations.
He said this step aims to cultivate a disciplined work environment and deter any potential misuse of social media that could jeopardize institutional security.
Recognizing the need for effective communication, BuCor has provided an alternative by permitting the use of official email services, such as Gmail or Yahoo, for essential correspondence. This ensures that vital communication lines remain open while adhering to the security protocols set by the bureau.
“While we are limiting the use of certain technologies, we are not hindering necessary communication. Official email channels will suffice for all operational requirements,” Catapang said.
He urged all personnel to treat the policies as a crucial part of the bureau’s reform agenda.
“This is a non-negotiable directive that aligns with our mission to uphold the law and ensure justice is served within the confines of our facilities.”
