Customs “fixer” Mark Taguba will be temporarily detained at the House of Representatives detention facility due to potential security threats, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said Friday.

According to the BuCor, Taguba will be transferred from his current detention at the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

“The transfer is intended to remain in effect until the Quad Committee concludes its investigation or until the potential threats against Taguba are adequately addressed,” BuCor said in a statement.

The motion for Taguba’s transfer from the NBP was put forth by Abang Lingkod Party-list Representative Stephen Paduano during the QuadComm hearing on Wednesday evening.

In the same hearing, Taguba proclaimed his innocence as he maintained that he was never involved in the shabu trade.

The Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC)-Branch 46 sentenced Taguba and two others to life imprisonment in connection with a P6.4-billion shabu shipment from China in 2017.

They were found guilty of violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

Last September, the court also found Taguba and others guilty for importation, receipt and facilitation, and misdeclaration under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act in connection with the same shipment.

They were sentenced to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years of imprisonment and directed to pay a fine of P50 million for each count, totaling P150 million. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
