The Energy department has decided to move the third Green Energy Auction (GEA), or GEA-3, to January next year instead of staging it this December.
Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol said on Thursday that there would not be enough time given the upcoming holidays.
“With regards to the auction proper of GEA-3, we will probably do it by January already, as once the ERC (Energy Regulatory Commission) releases the PDM (price determination methodology) for that, it will probably be the holidays already,” she said.
ERC Chairman and CEO Monalisa Dimalanta said a deferment would be “reasonable.”
“However, we still plan to release the PDM of GEA-3 within the month,” she added.
As for the GEA-4, Capongcol said the department was still aiming to release a notice of auction and the terms of reference (TOR) later this month.
Based on a recently-released auction notice and TOR, the GEA-3 will involve a total of 4,475 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy capacity and will cover both non-feed in tariff (FIT)-eligible and FIT-eligible technologies such as geothermal, pump-storage hydro, run-of-river hydro, and impounding hydro.
The FIT guarantees a price for the electricity generated and fed into the grid as a way of supporting the development of renewable energy sources.
For the GEA-4, the Energy department is aiming to offer around 8,200 MW of total capacity, which could be increased, that will include renewable energy technologies combined with energy storage systems and also possibly liquefied natural gas.
