There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines after the magnitude 7 earthquake near the coast of northern California, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Friday.
“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” PHIVOLCS said in an advisory.
According to PHIVOLCS, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred near the coast of northern California around 2:44 a.m. on Friday. The earthquake has a depth of 13 kilometers.
Reuters reported that the earthquake prompted coastal towns in northern California to evacuate low-lying areas amid a tsunami warning that was later canceled.
There were no reported deaths or injuries.
Residents and business owners in Ferndale, a town with 1,400 people, were cleaning up broken crockery and merchandise after the earthquake.
