Twenty-two volcanic earthquakes were recorded on Friday at Kanlaon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Saturday.

The earthquakes occurred during the observation period of 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday.

The volcano also emitted 2,946 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Saturday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

Meanwhile, moderate plumes rising up to 200 meters tall were observed from Kanlaon’s crater indicating continuous degassing. The plumes drifted westward.

PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano’s edifice remains inflated.

Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is not allowed.

Likewise, flying aircraft close to the volcano is prohibited.

PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano may have sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity.

On Wednesday, PHIVOLCS shared time-lapse footage showing Kanlaon Volcano’s ash emissions.

PHIVOLCS said it is on high alert for the volcano’s possible magmatic eruption. —KG, GMA Integrated News
