An 18-wheeler truck allegedly crashed into seven vehicles in Barangay Mambugan, Antipolo City Saturday afternoon.
According to a 24 Oras Weekend report, a traffic supervisor explained that the truck, which was traveling from Quezon to Manila, supposedly lost its brakes while descending a section of the Sumulong Highway.
“Nag-lose brake itong truck. Sa Metro View pa lang daw, nag-attempt na siya magpreno, parang lumulusot na… May mga sasakyan sa gilid niya, lahat yun naano niya,” said a police officer.
(The truck lost its brakes. The driver had attempted to brake as early as Metro View, but it seemed like the brakes were no longer working… He crashed into all the vehicles next to him.)
The truck driver tried to avoid hitting passing cars by steering toward the side of the road, but seven other vehicles were still hit.
The truck driver’s assistant also jumped out of the vehicle.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries reported from the crash.
“Buti na lang yung driver ko hindi nagkaroon ng kaba, nagawan niya ng paraan kaya walang taong namatay. Tumalon na nga ako eh dahil baka mamaya mapuruhan ako sa ulo ng truck,” he said.
(My driver stayed calm and was able to manage the situation, which is why no one died. I even jumped out of the truck because I thought I might get seriously injured.)
Authorities have taken custody of the truck driver.
The damaged vehicles have been cleared from the scene, and the truck is scheduled to be towed later that night.
Authorities noted that the area is prone to accidents due to the sharp curve and steep slope of the road. They urged motorists to be cautious when passing through the area and to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/DVM, GMA Integrated News
