MANILA, Philippines — Christmas is just around the corner. I’ve recently unwrapped one of my expected presents every year. It’s the rom-com, family film “Our Little Secret,” starring Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding as Avery and Logan, respectively, yes, on Netflix. The streaming platform never fails to offer new titles that suit the atmosphere and mood of ‘this the season to be jolly, as a line from the popular song Deck the Halls reminds everyone.

It describes the film as “witty, feel-good, and romantic.”

In fact, all year round, one can also binge on Christmas movies and content because Netflix has a collection or serves as a repository of this kind of entertainment.

I have my list of favorites like “The Princess Switch” and “The Knight Before Christmas” of Vanessa Hudgens, and “A Christmas Prince.”

“A Cinderella Story: A Christmas Wish” with Laura Marano and Gregg Sulkin was also made available on the streaming platform.

The feeling is extra exhilarating when you watch the latest Christmas release from the streaming platform.

As suggested and “teased” by its title, which premiered last week of November, anyone is invited to discover that “little secret” between the female character and the used-to-be constant male character in the former’s life.

Spoiler alert, but I always think that movie watching is personal and your experience is definitely different from mine. We all agree on certain “facts” from it, but we see “certain aspects of the narrative” from our unique perspective.

Initially established is that Avery and Logan are childhood friends-turned-lovers. Since passion inspires in love people to do cute, romantic and sincere gestures, he proposes a marriage to her to somehow assure himself that he remains the man in her life. She is moving to London for work. That plan does not go as planned.

Years have passed, or should one say many Christmases have passed, that make them grow apart and thrive in their respective professions.

Destiny or fate has its own way to reconnect people, begin from where they’ve left off, forgive and forget and put the past behind them.

Avery is going to spend the holiday with her boyfriend’s family and the mother is kinda hard to please. If you want to be part of the world of your loved one, you’ll do everything, especially if you see this guy or that gal in your future. So, the path to winning the nod of the matriarch is not a walk in the park. Her boyfriend Cam has a sister named Cassie, who has a partner.

And that person is Logan, who can lend a hand to Avery since he knows the family dynamics. What a small world indeed and thrilling. There are awkward moments here and there, but they make an understanding to keep their “little secret” between them, until a shrewd and smart family member becomes privy to it.

Then the narrative moves forward and hopefully she and he, and those who love them and whom they love will go on.

The film is easy to navigate and holds one’s attention. The characters are well-portrayed and fun to follow. You may have somehow an idea where the story is heading, but you still want to know how things come to an end or come together.

I definitely adore the story of romance, especially in this season, but I love the family aspect to it (the bond between Avery and her dad, and the relationship between Logan and his family). We all want to spend every special event, such as Christmas, with the people who are dear to our hearts. We value every memory, captured in family photos, and every place, like the physical house and the “conceptual” home, we’ve made and lived with.

It may take some time for people to forget and forgive, but there’s always that kindness that “resides” in us, you know. We may not say it (forgiveness or kindness) through words, but the actions, such as gifting someone a box of cookies, you know this when you’ve watched the film, clearly put it across.

Well, cheers and Merry Christmas. And Netflix has added some more content for this season, I think.
