MANILA, Philippines — With the start of the traditional Simbang Gabi tomorrow, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has put in place security measures to ensure the safety of the public who will attend the dawn masses.

PNP public information officer Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo yesterday said 41,000 police officers will form part of the security coverage for Ligtas Paskuhan 2024, including Simbang Gabi to be held from Dec. 16 to 24.

Police assistance desks will be put up in places near places of worship to protect people from thieves who may take advantage of large crowds to target people wearing expensive jewelry, cell phones and other expensive personal belongings.

Apart from uniformed police officers, Fajardo said the PNP will also deploy undercover personnel who are going to be on the lookout for criminals.

In addition, force multipliers such as barangay tanods will assist police in ensuring activities will be safe, peaceful and solemn.

Starting today, all leaves of police officers, except those involving emergency cases, are cancelled to ensure that all PNP personnel are ready for deployment.

Fajardo said all police regional offices down to municipal police stations have dedicated police officers to secure churches in their areas of jurisdiction.

Apart from churches, police officers will also secure transportation hubs, major thoroughfares, malls, flea markets and other commercial establishments.

She reminded churchgoers to avoid bringing children and senior citizens, as Simbang Gabi is expected to draw large crowds.

“Personal safety and security is our priority,” Fajardo said.
