Fourteen volcanic earthquakes rocked Kanlaon Volcano within a 24-hour period, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday.

PHIVOLCS’ latest bulletin also showed that the volcano in Negros Island emitted 3,620 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Saturday, December 14.

It also released a moderate 50-meter tall plume which drifted west-southwest. Continuous degassing has been observed at the volcano.

Alert Level 3 is currently hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano, signalling an intensified or magmatic unrest following its explosive eruption on December 9.

PHIVOLCS has recommended evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit, while flying any aircraft close to the volcano remains prohibited.

Possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahar during heavy rains.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. earlier assured the public that the government is actively managing the situation, with the Department of Budget and Management directed to release disaster funds.

The Department of Health (DOH) is also monitoring health conditions and addressing potential eruption-related diseases.

Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Negros Island remained on high alert. —RF, GMA Integrated News
