No serious security threat has been monitored so far amid the holiday season, the Philippine National Police said on Saturday, four days before Christmas Day.
“Sa ngayon ay wala naman tayong namo-monitor na anumang seryosong banta sa seguridad,” PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said in an interview on Dobol B TV.
(For now we have not monitored any serious threat against security.)
However, the PNP remains on heightened alert and is coordinating with other security forces, she said.
“Subalit hindi tayo nagkukumpiyansa. Palagi tayong nagmo-monitor at nakikipag-coordinate sa ibang security forces at mine-maintain natin ‘yung ating active security stance para ‘di tayo malusutan ng anumang banta sa ating seguridad,” Fajardo said.
(However, we are not being overconfident. We are continuously monitoring and coordinating with other security forces and maintaining our active security stance so we will not be caught unaware of any threat to our security.)
The PNP spokesperson said the police force has been on heightened alert since December 15 as part of preparations for the long holiday season.
“Naka-heightened alert na tayo simula pa December 15 bilang paghahanda sa mahabang holiday season. Siyempre tuloy-tuloy na ito hanggang January dahil may inaasahan tayong festivities. Itong Traslacion, tuloy-tuloy ang ginagawa nating paghahanda,” she added, referring to the annual procession of the image of the Black Nazarene (Nazareno) taking place every January 9 in Quiapo, Manila.

Aside from around 40,000 cops deployed nationwide to secure bus terminals, seaports, and airports amid the Christmas exodus, the PNP also established police assistance desks near churches and commercial establishments, Fajardo said.
The PNP also deployed K-9 units to help inspect the baggage of passengers at ports, she added.
As for Traslacion, Fajardo said the National Capital Region Police Office is leading the security efforts, but forces in Regions 3 and 4 may also be deployed as part of Oplan Manila Shield.
Malacañang earlier announced that December 25 (Christmas Day) and 30 (Rizal Day) are regular holidays, while December 24 (Christmas Eve) and 31 (Last Day of the Year) are special non-working days. —KG, GMA Integrated News
