FIRST lady Liza Araneta-Marcos recently took to social media to express her gratitude to the “loyalists” who never withdrew their support for her husband, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., amid all the challenges and political noise of the past several months.

“They say you’ll only know who your real friends are when life knocks you down. For all the loyalists who stood by my husband when he was at his lowest, my sons and I will be forever grateful,” she said in an Instagram post on Dec. 20, 2024.

The first lady went on to acknowledge their “kindness, love, and unwavering support” to the president and their family during the times they “needed it most.” “From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for being our light during those difficult times,” she said.

It was not the first time the first lady, a lawyer, bared her thoughts regarding issues hounding her family.

Last April, she admitted that her relationship with Vice President Sara Duterte had turned sour after her family hurled accusations against the president, which included accusing him of being a “drug addict.”

This did not sit well with the first lady, and she said the Dutertes “crossed the line” and tagged the vice president a “bad shot.”

Despite this, the chief executive maintained his trust and confidence in Duterte, and it was not until the vice president stepped down from her post as secretary of the Department of Education last June that it became more evident that the Marcos-Duterte alliance had weakened.

Months later, the biggest shake-up experienced by Marcos happened — his public fallout with Duterte and the crumbling of their “UniTeam,” the platform they campaigned on during the 2022 presidential election.

Duterte in November went on an online verbal assault against the Marcoses and Speaker Martin Romualdez and even threatened to have them put away should something bad happen to her.

This triggered the Department of Justice to order the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate Duterte.

There were also calls for Marcos to be plucked out from the Palace through another revolution, but this quickly fizzled out. Kristina Maralit
