THERE are plans to open 30 new ecozones in 2025, mostly in the Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (Calabarzon) region, as well as in the Visayas and Mindanao, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Tereso Panga said.

“We had a lengthy discussion with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cristina Roque regarding ecozone development, and we are very supportive [of] how we can integrate more small [and] medium enterprises into them while creating more sites in the countryside,” Panga said in a statement.

“Ideally, we are looking to open around 30 more ecozones next year, and at the rate we are going, the chance to execute this successfully is more than 50 percent,” Pangan said.

“As for locations, these ecozones will still be predominantly in the Calabarzon area, but we are also looking at new growth areas in other regions, including Cebu and Mindanao as well,” he added.

Pangan specified the types of investments in the new ecozones are agriculture and green ore mining. “These are resource-type of investments,” he said, noting that it would cost P1 billion to build one 25-hectare ecozone.

The PEZA chief said the agency was also keen on building more information technology (IT) parks, which are hot ticket investments.

“These will be located in cities and municipalities,” he said.
