THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced on Sunday that they issued show-cause orders (SCOs) to 24 registered truck owners using worn-out tires.

LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza said that the move stemmed from the operations of their enforcers.

“We observed there has been an utter disregard for the road safety by some erring truck owners. In our aggressive campaign, some of the common violations are worn-out tires that are really dangerous not only to the truck drivers but also to other road users,” he said.

“We will not allow these erring truck owners to disregard the traffic rules and regulations. The instruction of our [Department of Transportation] Secretary Jaime J. Bautista is very clear: to make the roads safe for all users, and our aggressive campaign against trucks with questionable road worthiness is part of it,” Mendoza added.

LTO-Law Enforcement Service director Eduardo de Guzman signed the SCOs, calling on the apprehended truck owners to bring them to the nearest LTO office for a roadworthiness inspection and were also told to submit a written and notarized explanation as to why they should not be charged for violation of the Land Transportation and Traffic Code (Republic Act 4136), on the grounds that they had worn-out tires.

Mendoza also said the sanctioned trucks have been placed under alarm, pending their compliance with SCO for inspection.

He also ordered the LTO enforcers to further intensify their campaign against errant truck operators violating road safety rules after an incident at the Katipunan Flyover in Quezon City earlier this month that left four people dead and 20 others wounded.

“We would like to warn all truck drivers and operators to follow the law because what is at stake here is the life and limbs of all road users. What’s possible before is not possible today because the problem you have with us is big, if ever we see you,” Mendoza said.

LTO’s campaign against errant trucks is part of their recently launched Stop Road Crash advocacy.
