The seismic activity persisted at Kanlaon Volcano with 15 volcanic earthquakes being monitored over a 24-hour period, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Monday.
Based on PHIVOLCS’ latest bulletin, the volcano in Negros Island also spewed 7,198 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Sunday, December 22.
Its plume also remained obscured and its edifice inflated.
Alert Level 3 is currently raised over Kanlaon Volcano, signalling a magmatic unrest following its eruption on December 9.
PHIVOLCS has since then recommended evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Region 6 said the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone around Kanlaon Volcano may possibly be extended to 10 kilometers due to the threat of lahar flows.
Possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.—Giselle Ombay/AOL, GMA Integrated News
