A special investigation task group (SITG) has been formed to look into the slay try against an election supervisor in Sulu, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday.

“Nag-create na tayo ng special investigation task group na tututok po sa kasong ito,” PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said at a press briefing.

(We have created a special investigation task group that will focus on this case.)

Sulu election supervisor Julie Vidzfar was on their way home when unidentified gunmen attacked their vehicle in Zamboanga City on Saturday.

Vidzfar was unharmed but the sibling of the poll official was killed by a gunshot to the head.

Police have started backtracking CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators in the shooting incident, according to Fajardo.

“We are not discounting the possibility na ito ay may kinalaman sa kanyang trabaho bilang election officer dahil initial interview conducted by our investigating unit may mga nabanggit po si Atty. Julie na may mga hawak po siyang kaso relating sa election. So titignan po natin yan na anggulo,” Fajardo said.

(We are not discounting the possibility that this has something to do with their work as an election officer because Atty. Julie in the initial interview said that they are handling cases related to the election. So we are looking at that angle.)

Despite the violent incident, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will not declare Sulu as an area of concern.

“Ang isang insidente ng karahasan ay hindi dapat gawing basehan para sabihin na ang probinsya ay dapat ilagay sa tinatawag na Comelec control or area of concern,” Comelec  chairperson George Erwin Garcia said on Monday.

(An incident of violence should not be used as a basis to say that the province should be placed under what is called Comelec control or designated as an area of concern.)

“Mali po ‘yun dahil napaka-unfair sa ekonomiya, sa pamamahala, at local government unit (LGU) ng mismong lugar…Ang Sulu at this point is not a candidate for area of concern o ilagay siya sa Comelec control,” he added.

(That would be unfair to the economy, governance, and the LGU of the area. At this point, Sulu is not a candidate for designation as an area of concern or for being placed under Comelec control.) — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
