(UPDATE) IN a bid to accommodate more street-dwelling families and individuals, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Tuesday that its newly opened “Walang Gutom Kitchen” (WGK) would remain open during the holiday season.
DSWD Secretary Rexlon Gatchalian said that the soup kitchen in Pasay City will continue to provide food on Dec. 24, 30 and 31, which are non-working holidays.
Although it would be closed on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and Jan. 1 (New Year), the soup kitchen would, however, continue operating from Dec. 26 to 29, which are regular days, Gatchalian said.
Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, also the DSWD spokesman, said the WKG is open to all families and individuals in street situations (FISS) and those experiencing involuntary hunger.
She said individuals from diverse backgrounds found on streets were taken to the “Pag-Abot” processing center for initial assistance through the WKG.
The agency said the kitchen was established to address involuntary hunger and reduce food wastage by turning donated surplus food from hotels, restaurants, and organizations into hot, nutritious meals.
She clarified that the food provided is not “pagpag” or discarded food “but fresh, healthy, and delicious meals.”
