A total of 101 fireworks-related injuries have been recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) as of December 27, 2024.
“As of 6 a.m. ng December 27, may naitala na tayo na 101 fireworks-related injury nationwide,” said DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Albert Domingo at a public briefing.
(As of 6 a.m. of December 27, we have recorded 101 fireworks-related injuries nationwide.)
He said this is based on the data from the central hospitals nationwide, where the most number of fireworks-related injuries were from:
- Metro Manila
- Central Luzon
- Cagayan Valley
- Western Visayas
- Ilocos
- Central Visayas
Domingo said the common cause of such injuries is the use of illegal firecrackers.
“Halos walo sa bawat sampu na mga fireworks injuries ay dahil sa mga illegal na paputok, partikular na ang boga, five star at saka piccolo,” he said.
(Almost eight out of ten fireworks injuries were caused by illegal fireworks, particularly boga, five star and piccolo.)
He stressed that even ‘kwitis’ was logged as the top 4 causes of fireworks-related injuries– despite being legal.
“Kwitis kahit legal siya, yan po ay lumipipad. Kung hindi tayo marunong gumamit or marunong tayo at tama yung gamit yung pagtutok ay problema pa rin na kapag pumalya baka mapunta sa kapitbahay,” he warned.
(Although kwitis is legal, it flies around so whether you know how to use it or not, the problem is if this fails, this may reach your neighbors.)
Of the 101 individuals, most were injured in their eyes, hands, legs, and shoulders.
“Base sa talaan nasa lima 5% nagkaroon na ng amputation or yung naputulan ng bahagi ng katawan,” he said.
(Based on the record, 5% of those injured went through amputation.)
Domingo also noted that those affected may also suffer from temporary hearing loss.
With this, the health department continues to monitor fireworks-related injuries as they also actively urge the public to avoid using fireworks to prevent such incidents.
