The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday said shellfish collected and tested in some waters of Zamboanga, Samar, and Biliran are still positive for toxic red tide.
In its bulletin, the BFAR said the shellfish in Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; coastal waters of Daram Island and Irong-Irong Bay in Samar; Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; coastal waters of Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay Province; and coastal waters of Biliran Islands in Biliran Province are still positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide.
The BFAR said this is beyond the regulatory limit.
On the other hand, the coastal waters of Zumarraga Island are free from toxic red tide.
All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the abovementioned areas are not safe for human consumption.
Meanwhile, fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
