THE Philippine Embassy in Washington explored ways on how to provide free legal aid to undocumented Filipino immigrants in the United States as the incoming Trump administration intends to deport illegal aliens.
Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez on Jan. 8 met with representatives of the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund (Faldef) to discuss the matter.
The embassy said Romualdez also discussed “potential partnership” with Faldef “on the provision of pro bono legal assistance to undocumented Filipino immigrants in the US.
Romualdez emphasized the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Filipinos, regardless of their immigration status.
“We are exploring all possible avenues to provide legal support and resources to those who may be affected by these developments,” he told Faldef.
Romualdez earlier said that 250,000 to 300,000 Filipinos illegally staying in the US, or those without “any kind of status,” should voluntarily return to the Philippines or start working on their documents.
The embassy said Faldef representatives, led by its President Jose Teodoro Mallonga, “shared insights into the challenges faced by undocumented Filipinos, including access to legal counsel and understanding of their rights and accessible resources.”
They outlined ongoing efforts to “offer pro bono (free) legal services, organize community forums, and partner with other Filipino community groups to strengthen the support network for vulnerable populations,” it added.
Romualdez assured Faldef that the embassy’s doors “remain open to all Filipinos, especially those with illegal status, seeking assistance.”
The embassy called on all stakeholders, including Filipino community organizations, legal experts and advocates, to support the most vulnerable members of the Filipino community.
The Philippine ambassador and consuls general in the US said they will assist Filipinos regardless of their immigration status amid the plan of the Trump administration to deport illegal migrants.
President-elect Donald Trump vowed to conduct a sweeping crackdown on immigration and tighten border control which were part of his campaign promises.
“The Philippine Embassy and Consulates General will continue to provide consular services to all Filipino nationals regardless of their immigration status,” they said.
