Gunman killed, cop wounded in Sultan Kudarat shootout

COTABATO CITY , Philippines — A policeman killed in a shootout one of two motorcycle-riding men who shot him while driving an impounded vehicle to the Highway Patrol headquarters in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat on Saturday.

Lt. Col. Julius Malcontento, Isulan town police chief, said M/Sgt. Jenathan Waguia, a Sultan Kudarat highway patrol team member, was wounded in the incident and is recuperating at the provincial hospital.

Waguia and other patrol members were manning a checkpoint in Barangay Impao when they flagged a minivan without license plates.

When the driver failed to produce any document, Waguia drove the vehicle for impounding. However, two men on a motorcycle trailed and shot him.

Waguia, despite a gunshot wound in his right torso, was able to shoot back, killing one of his attackers.
