Heavy traffic was observed Monday morning in the Quiapo area in Manila as Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) held a peace rally at the Quirino Grandstand, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“Base sa traffic monitoring, mabigat na ang daloy ng trapiko sa bandang Quiapo, Manila dahil sa mga nakaparadang sasakyan ng mga nakiisa sa aktibidad sa lugar,” the MMDA said on Facebook.

(Based on Metrobase’s traffic monitoring, heavy traffic has been observed around the area of Quiapo, Manila due to the parked vehicles of some participants.)

“Sa ngayon, wala pang naiulat na untoward incident o aberya at banayad pa naman ang daloy ng trapiko sa ibang lugar,” it added.

(So far, no untoward incidents or problems have been reported and the traffic flow in other areas is still light.)

MMDA chairman Don Artes led the monitoring on the situation of roads in Metro Manila, particularly in Manila and Pasay which are affected by the peace rally.

As of 10 a.m., the Philippine National Police (PNP) said around 1.5 million people have been monitored at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila for the INC rally.

In light of the INC rally, the MMDA said the following roads have been closed to traffic since 4 a.m. on Monday:

  • Katigbak Drive
  • South Drive
  • Roxas Boulevard (from UN Avenue to P. Burgos)
  • TM Kalaw
  • Bonifacio Drive (from P. Burgos to Anda Circle)
  • P. Burgos (from Roxas Boulevard to Taft Avenue)
  • Maria Orosa St.

Alternative routes are set for affected motorists.

Malacañang on Monday expressed hope that the INC’s “National Rally for Peace” would bring clarity to the issues that the country faces at present. —Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News
