President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday vowed to identify the funding for the continued construction of the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) building at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has asked for funding for the project to prevent the delays and avoid the structural deterioration of the VIP administration building.

DOST chief Renato Solidum said the 2025 national expenditure program of the Department of Public Works and Highways did not allocate budget for VIP.

“I think in the immediate future, okay. We prepare for the big one, the big pandemic,” Marcos said during the meeting with DOST.

“We find money for this when we are able to identify the specific items as you know not ready for implementation. ‘Yung hindi kumpleto ang papeles (Those with incomplete papers),” Marcos told Solidum.

Solidum said the VIP needs P680 million to pursue its plans including the development of vaccines for humans, animals and plants.

The DOST chief said the VIP would not be limited to human health concerns as it will also address viruses affecting animal and plant health.

To recall, the creation of VIP is one of the legislative measures that Marcos asked Congress to pass during his first State of the Nation Address.

Marcos had said the VIP will be an attached agency of the DOST, adding all offices and units under the DOST with functions related to virology shall be transferred to the VIP. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
