Why does one feel gloomy on a rainy day?

Many people have different and varied reactions to rainy days — some good, others bad. But whatever the effect might be on you, there is a reason for this. Let’s unravel the mysterious effects of rainy days on one’s mind, body and  yes, even our emotions.

All about pressure. Barometric pressure drops due to the low atmospheric pressure. Thus, a change in pressure can cause a slight decrease in oxygen levels leading to lethargy, fatigue and gloominess.

Moreover, humidity levels are higher making people feel sluggish and possibly, uncomfortable. These factors can lead to a gloomy mood.

On the other hand, there are people who enjoy rainy days. Their impulse is to sit back, relax or sleep all day. In either case, rainy days do make it more difficult to stay focused on work

Lack of light. The sun is obscured when it rains. Diminished sunlight could affect the balance of melatonin and serotonin. These are neurotransmitters that regulate mood. It is important to remember that low serotonin may contribute to feelings of gloominess.

By contrast, if it were a sunny day, one is encouraged to go outdoors and take in some sun. This old fashioned remedy to chase the blues is 100 percent effective. More sunlight means more serotonin production. The result is a more cheerful disposition.

Personal matters. When it rains, our personal plans are changed and these little challenges can cause people a certain degree of  anxiety and frustration.

Being forced to go indoors might make it cozy but it also carries a sense of confinement and possibly, restlessness.

Cultural impressions towards rain and its association with mood, could also affect the individual. This could bring about melancholy, nostalgia and sentimentality.

Health aspects. There are physical discomforts caused by rainy days such as sinus pressure, migraines and arthritis. In fact, extremely sensitive people can predict a sudden change in weather through stuffiness in the nasal passages, which get congested due to a rise in humidity, or an overall feeling of heaviness.

Rain can stir up pollen and mold spores. They become airborne and can cause allergies. Ozone levels can also change during a storm due to lightning and other atmospheric electrical activity.

Allergy sufferers may also react to volatile organic compounds or VOCs — such as terpenes and isoprenes released by plants — which contribute to ground-level ozone and can worsen symptoms.

Now that you understand why and how rain can affect you, here are ways to chase those blues in case you have them.

Consider the indoors as a playground for fun and relaxation. Staying home has its benefits. Use this time to have a warm bath, read a book, do your journaling, catch up with relatives and friends online, do some decluttering or recover your lost sleep.

You may consider picking up a new hobby like cooking or knitting. It is a good time for a movie marathon with family and friends.

With all the time you have indoors, use this opportunity to go to your quiet space and meditate.

This is the best time to sit back and sip your favorite beverage whether it is a hot cup of sliced ginger, freshly-squeezed orange or an avocado smoothie.

Those with allergies are advised to keep warm and do a steam inhalation of lavender and peppermint essential oils.

For those who wish to stay active in the community doing CSR activities, joining a fund drive or relief operations can lend meaning and relevance to your day.

Affirmation: “It’s raining miracles in my life.”

Love and light.
