METRO MANILA, Philippines — Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) announced on Monday it plans to construct a 49-megawatt (MW) standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in Toledo, Cebu.
The generation arm of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said that the BESS will be used for regulating and contingency reserves purposes, and will play a key role in ensuring reliable and balanced power delivery across the Visayas grid, particularly in maintaining the quality and safety of electricity reaching end-users.
MGen added that due to the region’s growing demand and the increasing share of variable renewable energy, battery energy storage has become essential in managing system reliability and ensuring sufficient grid support during peak and off-peak hours.
“This project is part of our broader commitment to strengthen the reliability of the grid and accelerate the country’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. Battery energy storage will be critical in managing variability in supply and demand, particularly as we integrate more renewable energy into the system,” MGen President and CEO Emmanuel Rubio said.
MGen said it expects to complete the first phase of the facility with a 25-MW capacity by 2026, with the rest of the project targeted for completion by 2027, subject to regulatory clearances.
The Toledo project will be its second BESS project in the country, MGen said. The first is the planned MTerra Solar energy project, which includes a large-scale 4,500 megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage development in Nueva Ecija.
Meralco’s MGen operates a diverse portfolio of power generation assets equipped with advanced technologies.
Meralco’s share price on Monday dropped by P4.00 to close at P540.00 apiece.
