GLOBE Telecom, Inc. (Globe) on Sunday said that it had joined the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system consortium that aims to provide high-speed, high-capacity and resilient connectivity across the East Asian region.

The consortium is chaired by Singtel and includes, along with Globe, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Arteria Networks, Chunghwa Telecom, Dreamline, Telekom Malaysia and Unified National Networks.

Its cable system will connect Singapore, Japan, the Philippines and other Asian markets and is envisioned to support the region’s surging data demand, with completion targeted by the third quarter of 2029.

“This new data superhighway strengthens our nation’s digital backbone,” Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz said in a statement.

“It gives businesses the scale, speed, and reliability they need to compete globally and embrace technologies that can uplift lives and drive inclusive progress for all Filipinos,” he added.

Designed using the latest submarine fiber optic technologies, AUG East will feature a high-count fiber pair system delivering bandwidth capacity capable of handling millions of simultaneous ultra-high-definition video streams.

Globe said industry forecasts showed that traffic from artificial intelligence (AI) and AI enhanced applications would surpass conventional usage by 2031 and that Asia-Pacific organizations would continue to lead global investment in generative AI and digital infrastructure.

“This investment in the AUG East cable system is a cornerstone of our long-term strategy to future-proof the Philippines’ digital infrastructure,” Globe Vice President Raymond Policarpio said.

“As AI-powered applications become increasingly pervasive, the demand for resilient, high-capacity international connectivity will also experience a surge,” he added.

“By securing our stake in this vital digital thoroughfare, we are proactively enabling our enterprise clients to leverage cutting-edge technologies, drive innovation, and expand their global reach, ensuring the Philippines remains a competitive hub in the digital economy.”

The AUG East system is expected to complement existing submarine cable systems in the region by providing additional bandwidth to meet consumer and business demand for reliable and low-latency data access while also improving network diversity and cable resilience in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Globe shares on Friday rose by P8.00 to close at P1,650 apiece.
