MANILA, Philippines — Japanese video game company Nintendo has debunked the popular belief that its popular characters, Mario and Princess Peach, are not in a relationship.

On the Nintendo Today app last week, the company gave the following statement:

“Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.”

The statement caught fans by surprise, particularly as many games see Mario and Peach sharing light kisses whenever the former saves the princess from the antagonist Bowser or any other dilemma.

Nintendo executive Yoshiaki Koizumi said back in 2017 that he believes Mario “carries a bit of a torch for Peach” and if he didn’t “[Mario] wouldn’t be wasting his time rescuing her over and over again.”

While not explicity saying they were an item, Koizumi only responded “the heart of a woman is a mystery” after being asked if Peach had mutual feelings.

This revelation is similar to other official clarifications regarding fictional characters, like Hello Kitty not being a cat and Squidward Tentacles actually being an octopus.
