At the heart of L’Oréal Philippines’ “Make Your Mark” event for National Lipstick Day on July 29 was a moment that went beyond the usual glam.

After sampling a curated spread of the beauty giant’s top lip products — from classic mattes to glistening glosses — we were handed small sheets and asked to leave our lipstick kiss and write down our personal lipstick pledge. A quiet moment, yes, but a powerful one.

In my case, the words came surprisingly easily: “I pledge to look as hot as this lipstick mark every day.” It was cheeky, sure — but also a reminder that confidence can be a conscious choice, and that owning your beauty, unapologetically, is a mark worth making.

That afternoon at L’Oréal’s new headquarters in Ortigas was proof that lipstick is more than pigment and packaging. It’s presence. It’s permission. It’s power.

The “Make Your Mark” event gathered beauty editors, creators, and graduates of the Beauty for a Better Life E-BA Program — L’Oréal’s nationwide livelihood initiative — for an immersive lipstick showcase across the group’s hero brands: L’Oréal Paris, Maybelline, YSL Beauty, and Lancôme.

Lipstick is more than pigment and packaging— it’s presence, permission and power.

Each presentation was a chance to touch, swipe, and test. But what stayed with The T-Zone most was how each lipstick also had a story — not just of shade and finish, but of purpose.

L’Oréal Paris, a name that has shaped the global beauty narrative for over five decades, opened the afternoon with a grounding reminder.

“Our mission has always been to support every woman on her journey to self-worth,” said Dapphne Crescini, L’Oréal Paris Social and Advocacy lead. “Because at L’Oréal Paris, makeup isn’t just about looking good — it’s about feeling empowered.”

They weren’t exaggerating. The Infallible Matte Resistance was an instant favorite — bold, budge-proof, and still shockingly comfortable thanks to hyaluronic acid. Color Riche Intense Volume Matte, with its powdery finish and elegant slim bullet, offered a more classic glide. And for something softer, cooler — literally — there was Plump Ambition, a lip oil that feels like a refreshing kiss with just the right amount of shine and tingle.

And because surprises are the soul of good marketing, they teased a new launch: Lacquer Resistance. Imagine the long wear of Infallible Matte, but with a sleek, shiny finish. I’m bursting with curiosity.

YSL Beauty — which only made its glamorous Philippine debut in late 2024 — followed on with plenty of sparkle. The beloved French luxury brand unveiled its very first lipstick line in the country: the globally celebrated Loveshine. A hybrid balm-oil formula, it delivers a glossy, high-shine finish that offers a more luminous glow than heavy pigment, with a deeply hydrating feel.

“YSL Beauty is shine, and shine is YSL Beauty,” said Rafael John Dimla, senior product manager for YSL, adding that the formula is crafted with the same sensibility as couture — elegant, buildable, and made to inspire confidence without apology.

Lancôme, ever the quiet sophisticate of the group, brought forth L’Absolu Rouge Intimatte, a soft matte that feels as luxurious as it looks. Think blurred edges, soft-focus color, and a whisper of French-girl effortlessness — the kind of lipstick that doesn’t need to shout to make a statement.

Martina Manulat, junior product manager for Lancôme, described it as an elegant staple for those who prefer their power subtle and self-assured. They also gave us a sneak peek of Juicy Treat, a fun new shade innovation coming next month, and methinks it’s going to be a sleeper hit.

Then came Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink, the crowd-favorite that’s earned its reputation for good reason. It delivers intense, locked-in color that doesn’t let go.

“This is the lipstick that keeps up with you,” said Amigaile Malalis, senior product manager for Maybelline, “especially in tropical weather where most others melt away by noon.” It’s bold, affordable, and basically made for the real-life chaos of a day in the city.

But beyond the textures, tubes, and shades, what made “Make Your Mark” resonate was how it lived up to its name.

One of the most moving parts of the event was hearing from a graduate of L’Oréal’s Beauty for a Better Life E-BA Program, which offers digital training in beauty, content creation, and affiliate marketing to underserved Filipinas.

Johanna Micaela shared how she turned her love of makeup into income and independence: “I used what I learned to create content. One of my videos reached 7.3 million views, and that turned into real earnings. That’s the power of beauty.”

In an industry often dismissed as superficial, this was a powerful reminder that lipstick can do more than prettify — it can propel. It can uplift. And sometimes, it can open doors where there were none before.

As L’Oréal Philippines Managing Director Yassine Bakkari put it, “Lipstick is more than a product. It’s a form of presence.” It’s a statement we can wear, a decision we get to make every day.

Because we’re worth it. And because making our mark can start with something as simple — and as brave — as a single kiss.
