PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Saturday that he was looking forward to working with new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in strengthening Philippines and United Kingdom relations.
Labour leader Starmer was elected prime minister on July 5, replacing Conservative Rishi Sunak.
“On behalf of the Philippines, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Labour Party and @Kier_Starmer. We wish the new government success and look forward to further strengthening our deep and longstanding ties,” Marcos said in a social media post.
The 2024 UK parliamentary elections held on Thursday, July 4, saw the Labor Party achieving a landslide victory, ending the 14-year dominance of the Conservative Party.
Starmer met King Charles III in Buckingham Palace, where the British monarch asked him to form a new administration.
“The King received in Audience The Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration,” the Royal Family announced on X (formerly Twitter).
In another X post, Starmer vowed to serve the British people.
“My government will serve you. Politics can be a force for good. The work of change begins today,” he said.
The Philippines and UK established diplomatic ties on July 4, 1946.
In 2021, the two countries agreed to undertake bilateral cooperation under the UK-Philippines Enhanced Partnership, aiming to forge closer ties in trade, investment, technology, security and defense.
