The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed construction of a P71-million flood mitigation structure in Zambales.

The mega flood control will prevent the overflow of Dinumagat River to its adjacent plains in Barangay West Birit, San Antonio, Zambales.

DPWH Undersecretary for Regional Operations in Region 3 Roberto R. Bernardo said the project was a 368-meter concrete slope protection with sheet pile as foundation.

It will allow the portion of Dinumagat River to handle larger water discharge without causing floods in the low-lying areas.

The river structure was also implemented to prevent road closure due to flooding and road degradation along nearby San Antonio-San Marcelino-San Narciso Road, which is a vital national tertiary road that connects the more rural communities in the area.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department is undertaking the construction of a flood mitigation structure along the Labiranan River in Barangay San Jose, Dulag, Leyte.

According to DPWH Region 8 Director Edgar B. Tabacon, the project is now 66-percent complete and is being implemented by DPWH Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office to alleviate potential flood risks and secure the riverside community.

During the occurrence of typhoons and heavy rains, it is one of the primary causes of flooding in the area.

Costing P76.8 million, the ongoing project presently ahead of schedule involves the construction of a riverbank protection retaining wall measuring 80 meters downstream and 254 meters upstream, drainage systems, grouted riprap, and rock embankment.

When completed, the project is expected to help the community withstand damaging effects of flooding to properties and livelihood and prevent significant loss of lives.
