THE nearly 3,000 residents troubled by the sudden flood caused by a damaged navigational gate of the Malabon-Navotas River continue to receive all forms of assistance from the local government, Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said on Tuesday.

Most of the flood-hit residents were still at the evacuation centers in the affected villages of Flores and Hulong Duhat, where they were visited by the mayor, who distributed food packs and medicines, City Administrator Alexander “Alex” Rosete told The Manila Times (TMT) via Viber.

Rosete said that Mayor Sandoval asked concerned agencies, particularly the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), to speed up the repair of the river’s navigational gate so that displaced residents could return to their homes.

Amid the flooding, the City Social Welfare and Development Department conducted an assessment to determine the needs of the affected residents.

Rosete said that Sandoval led a team to assess the residents’ situation, and to identify their immediate needs.

On the other hand, Sandoval ordered concerned city officials to ensure that all pumping stations and anti-flood devices were operational.

She also reminded the MMDA and the DPWH of her proposal for a permanent solution to the flooding problem.

At present, the city government said that underwater and crane operations were being conducted to see how the navigational gate could be permanently fixed.

Since its collapse in the middle of June, the damaged navigational gate has been causing recurring floods in parts of Malabon and its neighboring city of Navotas, Rosete said.

The City Engineering Office has also launched massive de-clogging activities along the waterways and creeks leading to the main tributary, the local officials said.
