Four workers were buried alive after the upper portion of a cliff gave way and fell into their construction site in Antipolo, Rizal.

According to Maki Pulido’s report on “24 Oras,”  the incident happened at the site of a two-story residential building at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Fairmount Hills Subdivision in Antipolo City.

The ground fell on top of construction workers who were digging at the site, burying four workers completely, and two workers partially.

One construction worker managed to run away to safety.

Due to the risk of another ground collapse, rescuers were careful with the use of the backhoe and mostly dug for the victims manually.

The Antipolo local government has ordered the suspension of the building during the investigation.

“Yung lupa po medyo loose po siya. Yung mismong excavation methodology kung saan, syempre, may safety standards yun dapat. Since hilly yung lugar, kapag nag cut tayo, dapat lalagyan ng retaining wall to protect other parts,” said Antipolo LGU Spokesperson Relly Bernardo.

(The ground is still quite loose. The excavation methodology where, of course, should have safety standards. Since the area is hilly, when we cut, there should be a retaining wall to protect other parts)

The construction had a permit but the plan submitted to the LGU only involved the structure.

The LGU is now considering requiring builders to also submit plans for building processes and method before they are given a permit. —Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/NB, GMA Integrated News
