Senator Alan Peter Cayetano extended his prayers and well-wishes to the family of former United States President Donald Trump in a Facebook post, while gushing about his past encounters with the American businessman and politician, who just survived an assassination attempt.

Cayetano had the opportunity to interact with Trump when he served as Foreign Affairs Secretary during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. The senator praised the authenticity of Trump, who is currently seeking re-election in the US.

He reminisced about an event where Trump took the time to shake hands with Filipino officials and inquire about their well-being. “President Trump stopped and asked how we were, shook our hands, and actually waited for us to respond,” Cayetano recalled.

Grateful for Trump’s safety, Cayetano also expressed condolences to the families of those who were killed and critically injured in the latest political violence in the US. He acknowledged the traumatic impact of the incident and recalled the assassination of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“Life on Earth can be gone in a split second. That was my reflection when I saw the video of the (assassination) attempt on Mr. Trump — that life on earth can be gone in the snap of a finger. We must always be ready to go any time,” Cayetano said.

Trump narrowly escaped an assassination bid during a rally near Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning in Manila).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the attacker as 20-year-old local Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican based on his voting records, according to US media reports.

Trump was rushed off stage after a bullet grazed his right ear. Crooks was shot dead by a sniper on site; another person in attendance was also killed, while two others were seriously injured.
