THE Office of the Youth in Maritime (YIMO) has achieved a milestone — becoming the first seafarer-led youth organization recognized by the United Nations Ocean Decade’s Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Program.
This development, announced in a recent ECOP Newsletter, marks a significant step for young people in the maritime industry.
YIMO President Yrhen Bernard Sabanal Balinis sees this recognition as a bridge between scientific research and policymaking and the invaluable experience of young maritime professionals.
Balinis said their first-hand knowledge of working at sea is crucial for shaping effective policies.
He cited YIMO’s two-fold mission — translating complex ocean science into clear information for seafarers and empowering young seafarers to be strong advocates for the industry.
By fostering an understanding of policies from inception to implementation, YIMO aims to improve transparency and, ultimately, safety at sea.
It also seeks to attract and retain younger generations by actively engaging them to ensure that the maritime industry will thrive.
“This recognition empowers young maritime professionals to actively participate in the UN system through YIMO,” Balinis said.
“It opens doors for more youth dialogue, both at the local and international levels, marking a historic turning point for young people in maritime careers worldwide,” he added.
‘Calling all seafarers!’
Balinis also announced that YIMO, in collaboration with ECOP, will launch its first groundbreaking project: “Through the Lookout’s Binoculars: A Global Youth in Maritime Outlook.”
This UN Ocean Decade survey focuses specifically on the perspectives of seafarers and young maritime professionals.
By understanding their views on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry, the findings will be used to inform advocacy campaigns led by YIMO and ECOP.
Balinis was a former IMO goodwill maritime ambassador.
Launched last January in Makati City, YIMO is already making a splash for young people in maritime professions.
