resident Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday evening administered the oath of office to newly minted Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara at Malacañan Palace.

“We are looking forward to many good things to come from this appointment. We have had some discussions before he took his oath to give ourselves a good idea of what we think needs to be done,” Mr. Marcos said in the oath-taking ceremony.

“I know that Sonny knows what is important and I know that he knows how to get these things done and so I’m very, very optimistic for DepEd,” he added.

The President named Angara as the new Education Secretary weeks after Vice President Sara Duterte decided to leave her Cabinet post. For his part, Angara expressed his gratitude to Marcos for entrusting him with the post.

“I’m extremely grateful to our President for entrusting me with this important task to lead a very important department to use the President’s words. Mr. President, I know how much you value education, much as every Filipino family does,” Angara said.

“I look forward to working very closely with you in the coming days and months for the needed reforms in our educational system, for the benefit of our young learners, for the benefit of future generations,” he added.

The former senator has officially succeeded Duterte, who left her post in June. He took over after Duterte transferred her role during a ceremony at the DepEd Complex in Pasig City on July 18.
