Elegance, grandeur, and gentility were on full display at the Johann Strauss Society of the Philippines’ (JSSP) Viennese Ball, held at the Rizal Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. This year’s ball marked a milestone as the society’s first official collaboration with the City of Vienna, represented by Ernst Woller, Deputy Mayor and President of the Vienna State Parliament.
The evening was a sublime celebration of music and tradition in honor of the 200th birth anniversary of Johann Strauss II, the famed Waltz King. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of acclaimed Austrian Maestro Rainer Roos, transported guests to 19th-century Vienna with a captivating repertoire of Strauss compositions. Adding to the splendor were soprano Rachelle Gerodias and baritone Byeong In Park, who delivered stirring performances of beloved arias and duets from Strauss operettas.
A highlight of the evening was the traditional Viennese cotillion performed by a group of poised and graceful debutantes, further enhancing the authenticity and charm of the affair.
The ball was led by JSSP Chairman, Consul General of Monaco Fortune Ledesma, and JSSP President and Event Chairperson Olga Severino Martel, with the support of Co-Chairs JSSP Treasurer Virginia Lane and Marissa Fenton. The evening’s major sponsors — AJ Violago, Shella Marie “Shy” Tan, and Gerry and Virginia Lane — were warmly recognized for their generosity.
A meaningful moment came with the presentation of a substantial donation to the Cultural Center of the Philippines, received by CCP President Kaye Tinga, underscoring the JSSP’s commitment to the arts.
Distinguished members of the diplomatic corps, led by Ambassador of Austria Johann Brieger and Roswitha Brieger, joined prominent society figures and music aficionados in celebrating an unforgettable evening of culture and camaraderie.
