‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel in development by Celine Song

MANILA, Philippines — A sequel to the 1997 romantic-comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding” starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney is officially in the works.

Sony Pictures has the Oscar-nominated director of “Past Lives” Celine Song to write the sequel’s screenplay.

Song is coming off her sophomore film “Materialists” starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, but she is not attached to direct the upcoming project.

Mulroney had previously teased the possibility of sequel, saying “lawyers were talking” about the possibility of a follow-up film.

The original film sees Roberts’ character realize she is in love with lifelong friend played by Mulroney, who is due to be married thus she does what she can to sabotage the wedding.

“My Best Friend’s Wedding” earned nearly $300 million (P17.4 billion) at the box office on a $38 million (P2.2 billion) budget and remains beloved by audiences.
